Welcome to CalView! We invite you to learn more about the geography and natural resources of our state by doing some hands-on mapping and problem solving with data from satellites and airborne sensors.
Aerial images of California are useful for a variety of tasks ranging from managing wildfires and urban growth to monitoring our streams, estuaries, and air. Professionals trained in GIS (geographic information systems) and remote sensing use aerial imagery and tools similar to those on this site on daily basis to solve challenges facing society.
CalView provides ready access to an extensive cache of images through the California Spatial Information Library (CaSIL) and makes working with geographic information easy and fun. Start with an aerial overview of the state and zero-in on a specific region of interest. Look at roads, streams, cities or counties - one at a time, or all at once.
CalView is California's implementation of AmericaView, a partnership between the US Geological Survey and the AmericaView Consortium. In addition to these players, the California Resources Agency, Environmental Information Catalog, and Environmental Resources Evaluation System, as well as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and CalSpace at the University of California at Davis work together to bring images from space into your classrooms and workplaces. |
