 Fire Map Service

Maplicity Fire Service

Launch the Maplicity Fire Service by clicking the following link:

http://calview.casil.ucdavis.edu/maplicity/maplicity.html?service=fire

When you launch the Fire service, two Landsat scenes for Path/Row
42034 are displayed (one acquired on 8/16/2002, before the Cone fire,
the other acquired on 10/19/2002, after the Cone fire). For each of
the two scenes, a true color (Band b321) and a false color (Band b457)
are provided. In particular, we'll be focusing on the 10/19/2002
scene.

Let's zoom to the Cone fire region, which is displayed with a magenta
outline on the map. First activate the Cone fire layer
(click on the layer panel, but don't click on the check box). then
click on the toolbar button for "Zoom to extent of the active layer".

Swipe and Blend Tools

You can compare two images using Maplicity's Swipe and Blend
tools. Access these tools by first clicking on the Imagery Menu, then
selecting one of the two tools. A dialog box shows up, allowing you to
choose two images for overlay. Once the images are selected, a new
window (with the title Maplicity MapImager Extension) pops up. By
adjusting the sliders, you can overlay the two selected images. Select
different combinations of images to overlay, by clicking on the File
menu, and click on the Load menu option.

As you can see, the burn area is hardly visible on the map with the
true color bands. In fact, the burn area is seen using the false color
scene from 10/19/2002. Even so, the burn area is vaguely noticeable
from the image. This is where spectral analysis can help us.
